Bakalia, Chattogram, Bangladesh

Client: National Housing Association The aim of this project is to establish sustainable housing for low-income individuals. The 12 buildings house approximately 2688 units, accommodating around 13,440 residents. Ensuring proper natural lighting, wind circulation, pedestrian access, and daily amenities is crucial to support this large population. Various options have been analyzed through a comparative assessment of the housing master plan based on standard parameters. Given the project's location in Chattogram, a meticulous observation of the seven-day weather report and precise monitoring of wind speed and direction at different times and days have been conducted. This detailed analysis aims to guarantee adequate natural ventilation, eliminating the risk of suffocation. Additionally, shadow analysis has been performed to ensure proper natural lighting. From a functional perspective, each of the 14-storey buildings consists of 224 units, each featuring two bedrooms, a toilet, a kitchen, and an attached living-dining room measuring approximately 574 sqft. Complementary amenities such as a training center, primary schools, shops, and a prayer hall are also incorporated. Wind simulation indicates that the major wind circulation zones in Chittagong are South-West, South, and South-East, with varying directions and velocities over time. Consideration of both velocity and surface pressure ensures comprehensive planning for optimal wind conditions.
