Laldighi, Chattogram, Bangladesh
Client: Chattogram City Corporation Following the Liberation War (March 26, 1971 - December 16, 1971), Bangladesh faced a critical challenge in restoring the Chittagong port, which had been mined and obstructed by submerged ships. On March 2, 1972, the Father of the Nation and Bangladesh's Prime Minister, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, met with Leonid I. Brezhnev, the Secretary-General of the Central Committee of the USSR Communist Party. During this meeting, Bangabandhu requested Soviet assistance in clearing the Chittagong port of mines and sunken vessels, a plea to which the Soviet Union promptly responded. To carry out this mission, the Soviet Union formed the Pacific Fleet Naval Expedition EON-12, dispatched to Bangladesh. From April 1972 to June 1974, Soviet sailors and divers successfully tackled the challenging task, overcoming difficult climatic and living conditions. Bangabandhu acknowledged their selfless efforts, emphasizing that this work laid the foundation for a strong friendship between the two countries. Tragically, on July 13, 1973, Yuri Redkin, the senior sailor of the floating workshop PM-156 of the Kamchatka Flotilla, lost his life in the line of duty. He was accorded military honors and buried at the Bangladesh Naval Academy's territory, now known as Redkin Point, where the Karnaphuli River meets the Bay of Bengal. This project was completed in honour and memory of Yuri Redkin, and it has been awarded a medal from the Government of the Russian Federation.
